Improved reliability and productivity with NIR spectroscopy

VisioTec first presented VisioNIR liquid at the ACHEMA trade show in 2003. Installed in a labeler for ampoules, the innovative solution allows 100% monitoring of the liquid in the ampoules prior to labeling.

A further significant step in advancement of the NIR technology is the integration of VisioNIR liquid into a filling system for suspensions.

Specification:
Required was the development of a method for "quantitative inline monitoring using NIR spectroscopy" in order to replace the standard high-pressure liquid chromotography (HPLC) technique and to gain full advantage of NIR technology. In the context of a feasibility study at the beginning of the project, extensive tests were carried out on a control line installed at the customer's manufacturing facilities.

Result:
Complete replacement of the HPLC analysis was achieved. The newly developed method immediately provided the customer with additional data on parameters which can influence the process but had remained hitherto unmeasured. Physical factors such as temperature, pressure, crystal particle growth and crystal modification, previously not taken into consideration, play a significant role in the filling process. In contrast to the HPLC analysis, VisioNIR liquid is capable of recognizing these parameters.

Benefits:

  • Production reliability - 100% inspection of every product
  • Indirect monitoring of the dosing process
  • Prompt production stop in the case of discrepancies, suitable adjustments possible
  • Fewer rejects so material costs are minimized (cylinder ampoules)
  • Lower infrastructure costs (e.g. for laboratory facilities)
  • Time saving
  • Quick changeover to a different product
